Poker Slang and Language
Ever talk to someone who really knows the game of poker inside and out about, well, poker? It’s almost like they’re speaking another language, and it’s really kind of cool.
I’m not talking about the basic poker terms, either. Things like flop and the river and pocket acesthese are all things any poker newbie can pick up watching the World Series of Poker on ESPN. I’m talking about knowing percentages off the top of their heads, or the intricate weaving of those obvious terms above into a free-flowing, completely off the top of their head conversation.
Hearing someone who knows the game (and doesn’t brag that they do, mind you) actually TALK about the game is almost like another language in and of itself. For one thing, they can probably remember specific hands that happened in a game just like you can recall a single great catch from last week’s baseball game. Better yet, some of the best could probably recite every hand, winner, losing or folded, back to you verbatim like a court record.
Of course, as a great poker player they’d have to be able to do this. Memorization, odds and wits are what’s needed to be considered a great poker player.
