Everywhere Glaciers Are Dethawing at an Alarming Rate

Published on February 3, 2009

Across the world glaciers are disappearing at a faster rate than at any year since measurements were started, states The Sun. Researchers from the World Glacier Monitoring Service, which follows 28 glaciers across 8 mountain ranges, estimate that from 1853 to 1969 glaciers were shrinking at a median rate of 33 centimetres a year. In between 1970 to 1998 the amount retreating increased to 60 - 90 centimeters a yr. Since then the mean has comprised more than 1 meter a year. And last year reported the greatest losses up until now of 1.1 meters.

Across the globe glaciers are retreating at least as fast as the glaciers in this small representative group with possibly calamitous consequences for close by villages. Shortly there are likely to be a lot more deluges, and in the long term, streams will disappear, resulting in critical water shortfalls.

Chamonix in the Haute Savoie, has a large amount of glaciers, the outcomes of climate change and the receding of glaciers could be keenly found. Perhaps this is why a lot of companies, and individuals appear to be more cognisant of these topics and are trying to take measures to reduce their use of energy. Hopefully it isn’t too little too late to arrest the results of global climate change and assure a world for our youngsters. So think about how you travel when you go for your ski breaks in Chamonix.
